“Individuals who choose to love can and do alter our lives in ways that honour the primacy of a love ethic. We do this by choosing to work with individuals we admire and respect: by committing to give our all to relationship; by embracing a global vision wherein we see Our lives and our fate as intimately connected to those of everyone else on the planet”
All About Love bell hooks 1999
Yves Salmon is based in her beloved hometown of London, England and has been a commercial photographer for over 20 years, with her primary focus being people and spaces.
Her visual sensibility has enabled her to work with organisations in the corporate sector as well as the arts and national newspapers, and includes institutions such as the Historic Royal Palaces and the British Film Institute. The latter being where she began her training as a photographer.
The making of a portrait is a collaboration and therefore as part of her ethos Yves believes in the importance of creating an environment where people can play.
Regardless of the type of commission, or the size of the project, and despite photography being a visual medium, there is always a period of research and development.
In 2017 after graduating from the University of Westminster with a Masters in Documentary Photography & Photojournalism she continued to develop her artistic practice with themes revolving around migration, identity and belonging. Thus exploring the impact of resettlement and how people claim their newly adopted Britishness, especially those whose origins have a strong connection with the United Kingdom, such as Commonwealth Citizens and the European Union.
With a need to hear those stories and a desire to preserve them, oral histories are an integral part of her practice and she uses them alongside photo imagery and alternative photographic processes, weaving the language of botany to link the past with the present.
Her teaching experience and completion of a PgCert Academic Practice in Art, Design and Communication (2021) at the University of the Arts, London (UAL) have continued to fuel her curiosity and motivate her to experiment with different methodologies, including writing prose and film making.
Her current work in progress is an exploration of her father’s working life as a carpenter upon his arrival in London in the 1960s.
